Junji Ito’s Uzumaki Is Getting Its Own Anime Adaptation

Toonami announced the anime adaptation of hit manga, Junji Ito’s Uzumaki. Production IG CEO Maki Terashima Furuta announced it on August 30th, 2019 during Ito’s panel at Crunchyroll Expo. Junji Ito will partner with Production IG and AdultSwim.

The four-part miniseries will premiere on Toonami in 2020. Mushishi director, Hiroshi Nagahama will direct the series. Hollywood composer Colin Stetson will score the movie. He has worked on movies with horror themes before. For instance, Hereditary. Moreover, Adult Swim uploaded a sample of the animation and the score on their YouTube channel.

While the name sounds familiar, Uzumaki has nothing to do with the popular anime and manga, Naruto.
Viz Media, the current publisher of the manga in North America, describes it as:

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world.

While a number of fans have shown their displeasure and concern regarding whether the adaptation will be a faithful one. Most subscribed YouTube creator, Pewdiepie, has shown his interest in Junji Ito’s Uzumaki too. Most importantly, it also has the support of creators of Adult Swim and even various news websites.

Consequently, the town falls into chaos. And their livelihood and settlement centers around spirals. Thus, slowly but surely, the phenomenon envelops them in its curse.
