Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime is definitely climbing the ladder of community favorites. Alongside masterpieces such as Vinland Saga for the season, the anime holds its ground. One may ask what attributes make this anime stand tall? Demon Slayer boasts its excellent animation and direction. In addition, it offers thrilling action sequences, loveable characters along with some hearty humor. The anime encapsulates the themes of humanity and family with poignance.
What Hit us the most in Kimetsu No Yaiba Anime?
Demon Slayer enjoys the capacity to evoke the most tender of emotions in their audience. Warmth, grief, empathy, and laughter. A connection is undeniable.
The Kamado family is an impoverished family of 6 under a single mother who resides within the isolated mountains. The absence of a father figure makes our protagonist, the eldest of them all – Tanjiro Kamado, the breadwinner of the family. As Tanjiro shoulders the responsibility of tending to his family, he lives a life disassociated from the world of demons. The anime begins with a regular day in his life that goes awry.
After an overnight stay he takes – to shelter himself from demons crawling at night, he returns home to a horrific sight. He finds his family slaughtered at the hands of a demon. His survival from the attack is a matter of luck (or fate) but to his surprise, the oldest sister – Nezuko survives the horror. Nezuko’s life is spared but not her identity – he discovers that she’s become a demon.
Dealing with his inability to save his family, he vows to cure his sister and make her human. Therefore, the brother-sister duo gets drawn into the world of demons and demon slayers that challenge their irrevocable bond.
The anime traces Tanjiro’s journey of becoming a demon slayer in his quest to approach the first demon in the world, Muzan Kitbutsuji.
Kimetsu no Yaiba genre is Adventure and Dark Fantasy.
Kimetsu No Yaiba Characters
Tanjiro Kamado is the protagonist of Kimetsu no Yaiba and is the oldest sibling of the Kamado Family. He inherits the job of selling charcoal from his father who passed away early. In addition, He is shown to be a responsible and compassionate boy who tends to each of his siblings and his mother while shouldering the responsibilities of an adult. Upon the death of his family, he strengthens his resolve to cure his sister and works toward this goal.
Right from the beginning, Giyu Tomioka is able to sense Tanjiro’s potential and his charming personality and recommends him to Urokodaki. Furthermore, Tanjiro is able to master the Breath of the Water under Urokodaki’s tutelage. His sword takes on a rare black color whose properties are barely known. Tanjiro’s strength and mental capacity expand as he encounters demons and cements his title as a Demon Slayer. Moreover, Tanjiro never shies away from training and looks for opportunities to increase his strengths. His bold move to practice the Full Focus Breathing and his mastery over it showcases his adept nature and drive.
After that, Tanjiro takes on the Lower Moon Five, Rui, and puts up a good fight. His fight with Rui makes us aware of the growth Tanjiro undergoes throughout the series. At the pivotal point of the fight, he displays his strategic skills by incorporating an age-old traditional dance Hinokami Kagura (Dance of the Fire God) into his fighting style.
Tanjiro Kamado’s personality
Tanjiro’s personality is what one would expect of a protagonist: simple, kindhearted, compassionate and determined. But not for one second is Tanjiro boring, or god forbid a cliche. In other words, Tanjiro’s compassion arises from a humanistic perspective towards humans and even, demons. Tanjiro may kill demons but he views demons as humans who have lost their way. Therefore, Tanjiro shows respect towards both species and only scum would be capable of provoking disrespect from him.
Tanjiro’s reflexes and intellect were quite evident from his fight against Kyogai, the Drumming Demon. His ability to strategize and defend himself while the room’s orientation changed is quite impressive. In addition, Tanjiro’s optimism regarding Nezuko’s situation and his determination is quite an endearing factor to his personality.
Nezuko Kamado is the younger sister of Tanjiro and the deuteragonist of the story. Her journey of the story begins with a massive transformation: from a human to a demon. Yet, Nezuko defies known presumptions regarding demons and the antagonistic view of them. And this is first witnessed by Giyu. He faces Nezuko as she protects Tanjiro from him – instead of eating him. Nezuko barely speaks during the anime as she sleeps to preserve her energy. Instead of deriving energy from a staple demon diet, i.e, humans – Nezuko’s method is a breakthrough. Most importantly, Nezuko was a caring and responsible girl as a human and manages to retain her protective and caring nature as a demon. Urokodaki hypnotizes her to view all humans as her family. But Nezuko’s will manages to improvise this and she is capable of viewing “good” demons as her family too.
Nezuko Kamado’s Ability
Nezuko usually spends her time in the box that Tanjiro carries around. Her ability to change her size makes her easily transportable. She preserves her energy and joins in on the action when her brother is in need. Also, Nezuko shows no hesitation in fighting to protect her loved ones. MANGASPOILER – Later in the manga, It is revealed that Nezuko can withstand the sun.
Nezuko unlocks her Blood Demon Technique during their fight against Rui. To clarify, Her Blood Demon Technique called the “Blood Burst” allows her to ignite her blood and engulf the opponent in flames through explosions.
Nezuko still struggles as a demon and refrains from having blood through sheer will. While Tanjiro increases his physical and mental prowess, Nezuko refines her mental strength to that of steel.
Zenitsu Agatsuma is probably one of the most eccentric and difficult to grasp. Zenitsu’s personality manages to touch two extremes that are highly interesting. Zenitsu is a coward who often afraid that his job as a Demon Slayer will kill him. And he makes sure to express that loud and clear – every day. Despite having immense strength and a technique mastered to perfection, Zenitsu’s self-esteem is his undoing. Above all, his frequent whining and cowardice raise the question of his motives. Zenitsu may have extremely low esteem yet he chooses to believe in the expectations people have on him. Despite his perception of himself, he works hard to live up to the high perception his teacher and comrades have of him.
Zenitsu Agatsuma’s Abilities
Zenitsu often comes off as comedic relief and evokes an emotion of pity from us over his pathetic antics. Yet, he is probably one of the most interesting characters of the series. He uses the Breath of the Thunder and is able to use only one form: the first of the Style. This style increases his strength and speed to equal that of a demon’s. Furthermore, his ability to hold his fort against demons and the fact that he was one of the few to pass the Demon Slayer test is huge sign of his capabilities and strength. To defeat a demon with only one technique at hand is quite a feat.
In addition, Zenitsu displays his intelligence when he uses Full Focus Breathing to slow down poison spreading over his body. Fun Fact – He also harbors an extreme liking towards girls bordering on perversion. Zenitsu holds immense respect for his friends and his late teacher, Jigoro Kuwajima. His determination to protect Tanjiro’s box while taking beatings from Insouke is a great example of his kind nature. Zenitsu’s sword takes on the color of yellow with a lightning motif running along the length of the blade.
In conclusion, Zenitsu’s character development is the one to look out for in the series.
Inosuke Hashibara is one of the traveling companions of Tanjiro who uses the Breath of the Beast. Inosuke’s mannerisms are almost wild like a beast devoid of any social skills. His motive in life is to fight and increase his strength – all that he has ever known. His motives are derived from his lifestyle in the mountains – where he trained alone. Inosuke’s talent and strength are uncanny. During his time with the boars, Inosuke’s innovative ability leads to the creation of the Breath of the Beast which is derived from the Breath of the Wind.
INOSUKE HASHIBARA’S PERSONALITY
Inosuke is a short-tempered and proud person who gets his kicks in life by constantly challenging any living being around him. He feels satiated through fighting and earning praises of his strength. He is unable to comprehend basic human kindness due to the lack of human interaction in his life. Inosuke seems to be an action-oriented person who does not strategize but dives in headfirst. His personality does not gel well with his feminine face which results in a lot of comedic scenes.
Although, Inosuke’s character does develop from how he was initially. The limit to his strength was a brutal reality he faced during the fight against the Spider Demon Father. With much ado, Inosuke dedicates himself to training. Tanjiro’s presence influences him greatly. As he starts understanding affection and develops a friendship with him and Zenitsu. Consequently, he even begins to strategize and assess his opponents during his fights.
Inosuke uses two swords that are chipped to create a jagged look for his fights. His blade takes on the color of blue. His Breath Style incorporates his enhanced sense of touch to develop unique techniques to fight. Initially, he would be as comical as to headbutt anything insight in order to pick a fight. But we have to see where Inosuke’s failure at the final battle leads him as a Demon Slayer and a human.
Kanao Tsuyuri is another interesting character that the anime has to offer. Not much is known about her for the most part of the anime yet her presence in the anime is made known. Kanao is an enigmatic person who shows a high level of strength, reflex, and speed. She is definitely a contender for a prodigy as she is Shinobu’s Tsuguko. Tsuguko is members who are elected to be the successors of a certain Hashira and are specially trained by the said Hashira. Kanao has a calm personality and usually maintains a stoic demeanor.
KANAO TSUYURI’S PERSONALITY
The anime reveals that her personality stems from her tragic past as a slave. Her parents’ abuse and their inability to provide push them to sell her off. This event causes an extreme toll on her mental state. As a result, she represses her emotions and isn’t able to make decisions for herself. It isn’t until the Kocho sisters rescue her that she is able to live respectfully. Yet the psychological damage of her past leaves her personality stunted. Although Kanae Kocho suggests her to flip a coin to make decisions for herself, Kanae’s death leaves her at square one.
Tanjiro’s presence in her life is huge as he is able to get her to talk. She begins to express emotions gradually as her interactions with Tanjiro increases. Kanao uses the Breath of the Flower just like Kanae. This Breath Style makes use of immense arm strength and quick reflexes that Kanao has developed.
Giyu Tomioka is a Hashira(Pillar) of the Demon Slayer Corps who practices the Breath of the Water. He is the first in the series to realize the potential of Tanjiro and Nezuko. He exempts them from any punishment and guides them to his master Urokodaki. Giyu has a rather serious personality and has trouble interacting with others – which provokes comments from Shinobu about nobody liking him. He has a reserved personality and adheres to a strong principle of justice.
He is an excellent Water Pillar as he has mastered all ten forms of his Breath Style and has even created the eleventh form. Giyu is able to practice Full Focus Breathing at all times like any Hashira. His strength, stamina, and speed are enhanced to equal that of a demon’s while using his Breath Style.
Shinobu Kocho is another extremely powerful Hashira who practices the Breath of the Insect. The Breath of the Insect is a style that she created by deriving it from the Breath of the Flower. This is due to the lack of arm strength that she struggles with. Shinobu incorporates the use of poison in killing her enemies and is proficient in medical knowledge.
Although Shinobu has a smile plastered on her face constantly, she is filled with extreme rage towards demons. She shows no hesitation in killing a demon and does not advocate even a bit of mercy. Yet, Shinobu shows maturity and compassion when she accepts Nezuko into the community after understanding their circumstances.
Shinobu’s rage comes from the death of her sister Kanae at the hands of a demon. After her death, Shinobu sheds her expressive and fierce personality and adopts her sister’s personality. Shinobu is always smiling yet is dangerous and playful – giving off a sadistic vibe.
Muzan Kibutsuji is the main antagonist of the series. He is the first Demon ever created and the progenitor of many demons. Muzan is a ruthless and cold-blooded demon that interacts with humans and his subordinates through fear and intimidation. He is an overly cautious man who has managed to evade the Demon Slayer Corps for thousands of years and treasures his life above all else.
He obsesses over attaining immortality and ridding himself of any weaknesses. Muzan shows no value to any other being and views the world through a self-centric myopic lens. Despite his narrow view of the world, Muzan has exceptional intelligence. Muzan is quite manipulative and is able to blend in with the human society with a family as his cover. His narcissistic nature is heightened to a point that he does not tolerate anyone being disrespectful towards him. He has no qualms or personal connection with his subordinates and places a curse on them to hide his identity. This curse instantly kills his subordinate if they ever mention his name or any information related to him.
Muzan is the one that Tanjiro seeks to exact revenge on for the death of his family. It is yet to be told why Muzan killed Tanjiro’s family but Tanjiro’s sense of smell confirmed his presence at the scene of the crime.
Kimetsu no Yaiba mainly focuses on two themes: humanity and family.
Tanjiro and Nezuko’s interaction with each other and others displays this. Tanjiro shows compassion for the enemies that he defeats and understands that demons are just humans who’ve lost their sense of self. Nezuko’s attitude towards Lady Tamayo and Yushiro is another example of this. Despite them being demons, Nezuko views them with care and affection as to her – they are just as humanistic. Shinobu, Giyu, Ubuyashiki and Urokodaki’s decision to believe in Nezuko and not prosecute her – comes from a humane outlook. To them, Nezuko displays no malicious intent and retains human emotions of care, affection, and protection.
Tanjito is seen offering prayers even to those demons who pass away. During the final moments of his opponents, Tanjiro provides them a touch of a human – a warm and kind feeling. This touch allows him to understand the tragic or misguided path that has to lead these demons to the present.
The theme of family is highlighted through Nezuko and Tanjiro’s bond. Tanjiro’s vow to cure her and his determination to achieve this goal shows the love between the two. Nezuko’s view of her family is clearly evident from how she treats the people who pose no harm. She touches them with affection and sees her own family in them. Therefore, it is understandable that Rui’s treatment of his “family” angers the both of them.
The anime juxtaposes Rui’s bond with his family with Tanjiro’s. Rui believes that he can buy or force a family bond. As a result, he never learns the true love of a family. While Tanjiro and Nezuko’s bond just emanates the warmth and trust that they have.
What does Kimetsu no yaiba mean?
KIMETSU NO YAIBA (鬼滅の刃)
To decipher the title of the anime, we can break it down to each word. The “No” in Kimetsu no Yaiba refers to a possessive form. That is, the word mentioned after “No” is in the possession of the word addressed before it. “Kimetsu” is made up of the combination of two kanji characters – that of, Oni (demon) and the character of destruction. Therefore, it roughly translates to Demon Destruction. While Yaiba means Blade or Sword.
KIMETSU – Demon Destruction
NO – possessive form
YAIBA – Blade or Sword
Kimetsu no Yaiba translates to Blade of Demon Destruction. This title highlights the importance of Tanjiro’s mysterious black sword.
Setting of Demon Slayer
Kimetsu no Yaiba is set in a Japan rampant with humans and the demon race. Some locations in the world overrun with modernity are quite oblivious to the existence of the demon race. Yet, the local and traditional areas of Japan still stay wary of demons. Kimetsu no Yaiba takes place in the Taisho Era where certain areas of Japan are dabbling with the vision of a modern nation. Areas like Tokyo are drastically different from other areas near the mountains. The clothes that the citizens of modern cities like Tokyo adorn have influences of Western culture.
DEMON CORPS AND NICHIIRIN SWORDS
The anime takes place in the world where a Demon Slayer Corps exists. The Demon Slayer Corps recruit Demon Slayers who are able to match the speed and strength of the demons. They do it through training and techniques. The design of the Breath Style technique of Swordsmanship is to increase the abilities of the Demon Slayers. One can trace the original Breath Style known as the Breath of the Sun centuries back.
The Demon Slayers use Nichiirin Blades made of ores that absorb sunlight (a major weakness of the demons). Decapitation with these blades can kill a demon. Once these blades are created, they take on different colors that have symbolism. A plant known as Wisteria is another element that demons avoid. Any Wisteria-based poison is likely to kill a demon. Demons also possess unique abilities that make them powerful. Certain powerful demons are able to unlock a Blood Demon Technique – a certain spell – that aids them and is unique to each demon.
